Mass awareness must on climate change
Environmentalist Dr. R.K. Pachauri has held extensive and meaningful talks over the burning issue of climate-change in the country with senior administrative officers at Mantralaya here today.
On the occasion, he keenly watched the presentation of the State Government's action plan to this act and termed it as a laudable effort undertaken before it is too late. Those present during the deliberations included incharge Chief Secretary O.P. Rawat, Principal Secretary Housing and Environment Iqbal Singh Bains and the Principal Secretaries, Secretaries and other senior officers of all the departments.
Environmentalist Sr. Pachauri while talking to the higher officers threw light on the latest updates about unprecedented increase in global warming. He was of the view that the temperature increasing by the day on the earth, in the sea and air is posing some very serious challenges.
In this connection, he refferred to the contents of fourth assessmented survey conducted on the international level saying that apprehensions have been express about melting of Himalayan glaciers by the year 2025-35. According to the survey report, 17 centimeter rise has been registered in the sea level, which the experts have termed as very serious. While mentioning catastrophes like Tsunami, earthquakes, hurricanes, floods etc witnessed during the recent years, Dr. Pachauri gave details about the frequency and intensity of hurricanes and cyclonic storms.
Dr. Pachauri said that the climate change is bent on causes loss of life and property apart from adversely affecting economic and developmental planning. Making a mention of possible corrective measures in this connection, Dr. Pachauri laid stress on increase use of renewable energy. He was of the view that this will put a check on global warming to a certain extent. For this, he stressed the use of solar lamps, solar panels etc.
System must for advance-warning and advice
Environmentalist Dr. Pachauri while making a special mention in Indian context said that several parts of the country have been experiencing extreme heat-waves. He said that constant research and monitoring of oceanic zones have become imperative now. Dr. Pachauri stressed the need for evolving an effective system for giving advance warnings and proper advice to people continuously about extreme hot and oceanic storms. He said that this system has not been adopted in an effective way in the country so far.
Safety lies in understanding situation at the earliest
Environmentalist Dr. Pachauri said that the crying need of the hour is to understand and assess the adverse conditions which may be created by climate change in the future well in advance. He also stressed for a study on the possible dangers of climate change in the context of Madhya Pradesh. He said that his organisation has started work in this direction in several states through environmental planning.
Dr. Pachauri said that all possible efforts in this connection should be undertaken only through environmental planning. He also suggested that the effect of climate change on crops should also be observed since productivity of wheat is decreasing. Similarly, availability of water sources as well as groundwater level is dwindling in the urban areas. Environmentalist Dr. Pachauri said that arrangements to check inundation of urban areas after heavy rains and floods have also become imperative.
On this occasion, incharge Chief Secretary O.P. Rawat said that the State Government has included environment improvement among its top priorities. He also said that the action plan chalked out in this connection and the agreement signed today will bring about good results in environmental conservation.
Principal Secretary Housing and Environment Iqbal Singh Bains made a presentation of the special action plan chalked out by Madhya Pradesh government. He also assured that the suggestions made by environmentalist Dr. Pachauri will be fully implemented.
