Assam moots green plan for towns
Assam government is mooting a plan to transform its towns and urban centres greener not only to make them scenic but also to fight the global issue of climate change.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has asked all municipalities and Urban Local Bodies to go for tree plantation and concentrate on planned growth of the towns to prepare them for the emerging environmental challenges and climate change.
“We are concentrating on planned growth of all urban centres but the growth should be environment-friendly. Our urban local bodies should plant more trees and improve the drainage and sanitation.
We are facing environmental problem of drought and rise in temperature due to shrinking greenery and unplanned growth of our urban centres. Hence we want our towns to be greener and our municipalities have to play a major role here,” Gogoi said while addressing the elected representatives 82 municipalities and urban local bodies at a function here.
The chief minister said government would provide financial support while forest and other departments would assist the ULBs to plant trees in the towns.
He asked all municipalities and ULBs to ensure that there was no haphazard growth of markets and new constructions causing harm to the environment and drainage.
Gogoi said apart from the financial support from government, the ULBs should generate their own funds. He also announced the increase in monthly allowances of elected representatives of all 82 ULBs and municipalities.
