Regional conference on health and climate change begins today
A three-day regional conference on health and climate change begins in Dhaka today to prepare the recommendations for the United Nation's conference on this issue to be held in November in Cancun, Mexico.
Policymakers and government high officials from eleven South East Asian countries including Bangladesh are participating in the conference to be held at Hotel Sheraton in the city.
The conference is being organised as the preparatory part of the 16th United Nations' Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of Parties (COP16).
An official handout said on Monday that the participants of the meeting would share their experience in climate change and its affect on health to prepare the recommendations for UNFCCC-COP 16.
The participants at the meeting will discuss the affects of climate change on infectious and non-infectious diseases and the health risk for climate changes. They will also discuss on how the entire health sector response to climate changes.
The government in association with the regional office of the World Health Organisation (WHO) is organizing conference.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. AFM Ruhul Haque will inaugurate the program while Health and Social Welfare Adviser to the Prime Minister Professor Dr. Syed Modasser Ali, State Minister for Environment and Forest Dr. Hashan Mahmud and WHO Southeast Asia Regional Director Dr. Samlee Plianbangchang will attend as the special guests.
Health Minister of Sri Lanka Maithripala Sirisena, Health and Population Minister of Nepal Umakant Choudhury, Health Minister of Maldives Dr. Aminath Jameel and Environment Minister Mohamed Aslam will join the conference, among others.
Focal persons from the health ministries and high officials concerned from the environment ministries of all the participating countries, representatives of WHO, World Bank, DFID, UNDP and other development organizations will also take part in the conference.
