Greenhouse gas emission from industries high: VC
THANJAVUR: India would be affected severely due to climate change considering the high emission from industries, according to environment experts, said P. Devadas Manoharan, Vice Chancellor, Anna University of Technology, Tiruchi, here on Tuesday.
The Inter Governmental Panel on Climate Change has expressed concern over India's vulnerable position.
After inaugurating a two-day workshop on Development for Technology Transfer on ‘climate change adaptation and mitigation' at Periyar Maniammai University here, Mr. Manoharan said steel, cement, fertiliser, paper and aluminium industries account for 60 per cent of emission in the country.
He called upon the young engineers to invent technologies which mitigate the adverse effects of climate change.
"You should invent new technologies that will help in evolving a sustainable, equitable and stable earth. Use of fossil fuels such as coal result in environment degradation. Alternative sources of energy such as solar and wind should be utilised.”
The Vice Chancellor said bio-diversity should be maintained as it is the essence of sustainability. Lily ponds and butterflies in rural areas are becoming rare due to climate change.
N. Ramachandran, Vice Chancellor, Periyar Manimmai University, said solar heaters and solar lights should be used in houses.
Mr. Manoharan released a souvenir and Mr. Ramachandran received the first copy.
R. Sowmeyan, Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, Periyar Maniammai University, spoke.
